City of Florence is the political body and administrative power of the city of Florence. Its duties, as provided for in the national legislation, include policy making on mobility, social welfare, economic development, tourism, environment, education and others. City of Florence has also a relevant experience in European policies communication, arising from hosting an E.U. Network Antenna since 1999.
Nowadays it hosts Europe Direct Firenze, which actively participates to the national and European network communication campaigns. In 2010 the Mayor of Florence joined the Covenant of Mayors with the aim to go beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reduction in CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency, intelligent mobility and cleaner energy production.
The related plan (SEAP) has been submitted in August 2011, and it is already been approved by COM Office. The Town of Florence is very active in several innovation areas spanning from security, sustainable mobility, pollution reduction, and traffic monitoring systems, to the creation of a city-wide wi-fi network with more than a hundred hotspots (in continuous improvement) where the focus is on contents, rather than on the infrastructure.
